Apple today explained why the new silicone ear tips for the second-generation AirPods Pro aren’t compatible with the original AirPods Pro.

In an updated support document, Apple said the mesh of the original AirPods Pro earbuds was “significantly denser” than the second-generation earbuds. Apple didn’t provide any additional detail, but mesh density may cause acoustic differences.

“The earbuds are designed for the AirPods Pro generation to provide the highest fidelity audio experience,” the support document says. “So, use the ear tips that came with your AirPods Pro. The AirPods Pro (1st gen) tips have significantly denser mesh than the AirPods Pro (2nd gen) tips.”

Despite the different mesh, the second-generation earbuds do fit the original AirPods Pro, so they’re still physically compatible.

The second-generation earbuds offer a new XS option, while the original earbuds are only available in small, medium and large sizes. Both generations of earbuds are available for $7.99 a set at Apple’s online store in the US.

The new AirPods Pro will begin arriving in customers’ hands and rolling out in stores the next day. The first review of the new AirPods Pro was shared earlier today, detailing improvements in sound quality, active noise cancellation, battery life, and more. The second-generation AirPods Pro are still priced at $249.
