iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Plus, Pro and Pro Max models compared

It’s official: the iPhone 14 is here. After months of leaks and speculation, Apple officially announced the latest addition to its smartphone lineup at its “Far Out” event on Wednesday, where the company also gave us a glimpse at the long-rumored Apple Watch Ultra, a new Apple Watch SE, and second-generation AirPods Pro.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 lineup includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Pre-orders for all phones will begin on September 9, with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max arriving on September 16. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Plus will be available until October 7th.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus brought a number of changes to the iPhone lineup, including emergency messaging via satellite and better battery life, while retaining Apple’s A15 Bionic chipset. The premium iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, advertise the aforementioned satellite features in addition to a new 48MP main camera, always-on displays, and even a notch replacement for real-time notifications.

However, given that each phone varies widely in features and pricing — the entry-level iPhone 14 starts at $799 — you might be wondering which model is right for you. To help you understand Apple’s crowded lineup, we’ve summed up and compared the specs of each model (along with last year’s iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini). While we haven’t officially reviewed the iPhone 14, if you want to take a closer look at Apple’s upcoming flagship, we’ve posted our initial hands-on impressions.

New features, battery life, and more

No matter which iPhone 14 model you buy, there are some changes and features that apply across the board. For example, the US model no longer comes with a physical SIM card tray and is all eSIM, which shouldn’t affect major carriers’ offerings, but could be a hindrance for some vendors. Plus, the entire iPhone 14 lineup runs on iOS 16 out of the box, so no matter which phone you buy, you can edit sent messages and add widgets to the lock screen.

Starting in November, all new phones will also support satellite-based emergency SOS. This will allow you to send messages via communication satellites when you don’t have a cell phone signal. While this is a premium service, those who purchase an iPhone 14 model will be able to use the feature for free for two years. In addition, every phone in the iPhone 14 lineup, as well as the Apple Watch Series 8, can automatically connect you to emergency services when it detects that you’ve been in a car accident.

However, this is where many of the similarities end. In addition to price, all phones vary in battery life and size. For example, the iPhone 14 starts at $799, but for $100 more, you can buy the iPhone 14 Plus with a larger 6.7-inch display and longer battery life. The iPhone 14 Plus offers up to 26 hours of video playback on paper, while the iPhone 14’s maximum playback time is 20 hours. Interestingly, the iPhone 14 Plus has even longer battery life than the $999 iPhone 14 Pro, which is said to offer up to 23 hours of video playback. That means the cheaper iPhone 14 Plus’ battery life is second only to the $1,099 iPhone 14 Pro Max, which offers up to 29 hours of battery life.

Similarities abound

In other respects, however, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are no different. They both use last year’s A15 Bionic chipset and share the same dual-camera system consisting of a new ultra-wide camera and a 12-megapixel main camera. Both also feature a new 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera with autofocus for group shots from greater distances. Apple also claims it has improved low-light image quality by 49% and made Night Mode twice as fast – we haven’t tested it in practice. Every phone in the iPhone 14 lineup also features Apple’s new Motion Mode, which should stabilize video while you’re recording in the same way a gimbal does. All models also feature a movie mode that can record 4K resolution at 30fps and 4K at 24fps.

But if you’re looking for a more capable camera system, check out the iPhone 14 Pro lineup. While the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro is lighter and smaller than the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, they offer the same triple-camera system and 48MP main camera, the first time we’ve seen such a sensor in an iPhone. The Pro models also It comes with Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip and a 1TB storage option, something the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus don’t have. They also feature an always-on 120Hz ProMotion high refresh rate display that eliminates the notch. In its place is a pill-shaped cutout called the “Dynamic Island” that moves around and displays various notifications, alerts and activity in real time.

by number

This is just a glimpse of some of the key differences that distinguish each model in the iPhone 14 lineup. However, for a more thorough breakdown, we’ve gathered all the relevant specs, so you can compare them for yourself in the table below. If you’re considering upgrading from one of last year’s models, we’ve even included the previous-generation iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini. Keep in mind, though, that the iPhone 13 Mini may be the last of its kind.
