Apple Watch Ultra vs. Series 8, SE, and more

The 2022 Apple Watch lineup has arrived with some major changes, thanks largely to the new Ultra model. But there’s a lot to consider between the latest model and its predecessor. Read on to learn more about Apple Watch Ultra vs. Series 8, SE, and more.

Since the Apple Watch isn’t necessarily an annual upgrade, we’ve included everything from the Apple Watch Ultra to the Series 6 and SE 1st gen to better understand the differences between all the latest models.

processor, storage, etc.

Last year, Apple used the same 64-bit dual-core processor in the Series 7 as the Series 6, but updated the S7 name.

This year, the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8 feature the S8 SiP 64-bit dual-core processor. It appears to have roughly the same performance as the S7 and S6, as Apple didn’t share any claims of performance gains in its keynote or on its website.

While you shouldn’t expect a noticeable slowdown from a Series 6 or 7 to an 8 or Ultra, if you’re using an earlier Apple Watch model, you should notice a faster and more responsive watch.

Apple does say that the S8 is 20% faster than the S5 chip.

Another benefit is the jump in storage to 32GB if you’re upgrading from a Series 3 or Series 4 to an Ultra, Series 8 or SE gen 2.

Another difference between the Apple Watch Ultra/Series 8 and the SE 2nd gen is that the latter doesn’t have the U1 Ultra Wideband chip.

Cases and demonstrations

The Apple Watch Ultra features Apple’s largest case and display to date, with the former measuring 49mm and the latter having a 410 x 502 resolution display offering 1164 square millimeters. Apple says it’s 27 percent larger than the Series 4-6/SE’s display.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 follows the same dimensions as the Apple Watch Series 7. Namely 45mm and 41mm cases and a larger display 20% larger than the Series 4-6/SE and 50% larger than the Series 3.

As for the straps, Apple says that straps designed for the 44 and 45mm Apple Watch can be used with the Apple Watch Ultra, and vice versa:

With the Series 8 and SE 2nd gen using the same form factor as before, all correctly sized bands will continue to work.

Battery life and charging

Apple Watch Ultra vs Series 8 battery and charging

A big change for the Apple Watch Ultra is the largest battery in the series. That’s 36 hours of standard battery life and up to 60 hours of extended use in low power mode.

Notably, Apple Watch Series 4 and later will feature a low-power mode and increase the battery of these models from 18 hours to 36 hours.

If you’re interested in using your Apple Watch Ultra, Series 8, or 7 for sleep tracking, you’ll get 8 hours of use on an 8-minute charge.

Summary of Apple Watch Ultra vs. Series 8 and earlier

Apple Watch Ultra vs 8, SE Summary

Unsurprisingly, the Apple Watch Ultra brings the most changes and improvements to Apple’s wearable lineup. However, for many, the new professional model may be overkill.

While the Apple Watch Series 8 may feel like a Series 7S or 6SS, if you’re considering upgrading from a Series 3, 4, or SE, you’ll get a bigger display, an always-on screen, faster charging, and all the latest and greatest. Good product health profile.
