According to reports, Apple plans to start showing search ads in the iPhone’s Maps app next year. Bloombergof Mark Gurman.

“I believe the engineering work to roll out search ads in the Apple Maps app is already underway, and we should start seeing it implemented sometime next year,” Gurman said in a subscription-only subscription to his “Power On” newsletter today. written in the author’s version.

Ads in the Apple Maps app will not be the traditional banner ads you see on the website, but paid search results. For example, fast food chains could pay Apple to appear near the top of search results when a user searches for “hamburger” or “french fries.” Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords. Apple also plans to show ads on the App Store’s Today tab and a new “You might also like” section at the bottom of the app listing, while banner ads appear in Apple’s News and Stocks apps.

Last week, Gurman said that Apple is planning to significantly expand its advertising business over time. Apple’s advertising division generates about $4 billion in annual revenue, and Apple’s advertising chief Todd Tracy hopes to increase that to at least $10 billion a year over time, he said in the newsletter.
