Protons may contain smaller particles heavier than the proton itself: Science Alert

New research suggests that protons may be more “charismatic” than we thought.

Protons are one of the subatomic particles that make up the nucleus of an atom. As small as protons, they are made up of smaller elementary particles called quarks, and they come in a variety of “flavors” or types: up, down, exotic, charm, bottom and top.

Typically, a proton is thought to consist of two up quarks and one down quark. But a new study finds it’s more complicated than that.
