With the successful AirPods series, it’s natural for users to wonder when Apple will release the new generation of AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. As we look forward to new releases for each of these products, we’ve rounded up the latest rumors below…
When will Apple launch the AirPods Pro 2?
Rumors of next-generation AirPods Pro models have been around for more than a year. For now, it is believed that Apple will not change the design of these earbuds. 52 audio A publication that correctly predicted the design of the AirPods 3 has revealed that the second-generation AirPods Pro 2 could feature a similar design to the current generation, but with tweaks to the earbuds.
Analyst Guo Mingchihe BloombergMark Gurman of the BBC has previously said that these earbuds may look similar to the Beats Studio Buds. Regarding its fitness sensors, a study by the company shows how AirPods can be used to monitor breathing rate.
In the report, researchers at Apple and Cornell University used a model-driven technique to estimate a person’s breathing rate using short audio clips obtained after physical exertion in healthy adults. The study found that this audio could be a “viable signal” for “passive estimation” of breathing rate, and it was also a more cost-effective method than traditional healthcare. We don’t expect Apple to bring the health sensor to this year’s AirPods Pro 2, though.
Another change expected for the AirPods Pro in 2022 is the redesigned charging case, which will reportedly remain 21mm thick, while it will be 46mm high and 54mm wide. For comparison, the current AirPods Pro charging case is 45.2mm tall and 60.6mm wide. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple may be preparing to switch the charging case from Lightning to USB-C:
I expect Apple to launch a USB-C capable charging case for all AirPods models in 2023. However, the charging case of the new AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2H22 may still support Lightning.
In a December report, Kuo confirmed Gurman’s claim that the new AirPods Pro would be released in late 2022 with a “significantly upgraded” chip.
He also said that thanks to new technology, the new AirPods Pro can support lossless:
We expect Apple to launch the AirPods Pro 2 in the fourth quarter of 2022, with new selling points including a new form factor, support for the Apple Lossless (ALAC) format, and a charging case that emits sound for user tracking. We are bullish on demand for AirPods Pro 2, with shipments expected to reach 180-20 million units in 2022.
9to5Mac Sources have confirmed that the next-generation AirPods Pro, codenamed B698, will feature the next-generation H1 chip, Apple’s own audio processor.Additionally, references to LC3 codec support on the AirPods Max Beta firmware suggest that the AirPods Pro 2 may be the first to add Bluetooth 5.2 support, which will bring greater stability and efficiency to wireless earbuds
In addition, Kuo also believes that when Apple releases the second-generation AirPods Pro, it is likely to stop using the original AirPods Pro:
2-3Q22 AirPods 3 orders decreased by 30%+. Demand for AirPods 3 is significantly weaker than AirPods 2 due to a failed product segmentation strategy. To avoid repeating the same mistakes, the AirPods Pro may be discontinued after Apple launches the AirPods Pro 2 in 2H22.
When will Apple launch the new AirPods Max?
For the high-end AirPods Max models released at the end of 2020, Apple has no plans to release the second generation.
Users have expected Apple to release a new model since the company released support for lossless quality through Apple Music last June, and the AirPods Max technically cannot play at that quality, even over a wired connection
The $549 AirPods Max are expected to remain as-is for a while, but Gurman reported in May that Apple may only have new colors planned for the AirPods Max:
“Apple has only recently caught up with demand for the product and has not yet developed a second-generation AirPods Max, although it has discussed introducing more color variations in the future.“
Since the AirPods Max just hit the market, it’s unclear if the company will update these earphones. 9to5Mac Parker Ortolani created a concept about the second generation, with USB-C + MagSafe charging, some level of water resistance, more colors, and more. Click here for more information.
Notably, Apple is working on a higher-quality Bluetooth codec for the current-generation AirPods Max. While the improvements are very welcome, Apple needs to update the hardware so users can take full advantage of the technology, and you can read more about it here.
When will Apple launch AirPods 4?
Wow, are you already looking forward to the AirPods 4? Apple just released the AirPods 3 in October, which look similar to the AirPods Pro, but without the earbuds.
These wireless earbuds don’t have ANC or Transparency Mode, though the company says they get a boost in bass. They also have a 6-hour battery on a single charge and a new MagSafe charging case. Apple also supports Dolby Atmos with Spatial Audio with these earbuds.
It’s unclear when the company will release the AirPods successor, but you can learn more about the AirPods 3 here. As the company prepares to launch a new codec, it makes sense whether the AirPods 4 will support Bluetooth 5.2 and the LC3 codec – but no other rumors.
